Mokumegane

This is a flower vase created by employing the technique of the pattern welding “Mokumegane” which was invented in the 17th century in Japan.

I have exposed the laminated cross-section of metals and produced the characteristic patterns on it by repeating process of works to layer, join and roll more than twenty sheets of metal, and smooth away, strike and elongate their cases.

Using the traditional Japanese alloy as materials, including “Shakudo” (an alloy of copper and gold) and “Shibuichi” (an alloy of silver and copper), I have striven to create organic patterns from the color of metals.
