About the Characteristics and Properties of “Pewter”

2006.09.02 Metalcraft Care

We would like to introduce you to the various metals we use in our metal crafts.

Each metal has its own unique flavor and characteristics, which are skillfully utilized for different purposes and designs. This time, we would like to introduce “Pewter” which has been our specialty since our establishment in the Edo period.

●Low melting point

Pewter melts at a low temperature, approximately 230 degrees Celsius, because of this, a furnace is not necessary for its production. Compared to iron and copper, pewter requires less sophisticated equipment and could even be made at home. However, it is not possible to make vessels that can be directly placed over a fire (e.g., kettles and pots).

●Extremely soft

Pewter can be scratched by cloth, paper, or even fingers. If a vessel is dropped, it will likely be dented. If used for a long time, some vessels become covered with scratches, but this is the advantage of pewter, because the scratches give the pewterware character and beauty over time. The more you use pewterware, the more it develops its own texture, and the beauty of its appearance is due to its softness.

●Good aroma

Each metal has its own unique aroma. Pewter, of course, also has a slight fragrance, and its sweet, fruity aroma is loved for its ability to enhance tea and sake.

●Eco-friendly material

Since ancient times, pewterware has been easily repaired, and even when it eventually becomes unusable, it can be melted down and remade into a new one. We have also established a system in which we take back old pewter as ingots and deliver new ones. It is a very eco-friendly material that fits into a recycling-oriented society.

●Production methods

There are two main production methods: cutting using a wheel and forging by a hammer.
