Japanese metalwork today: an exhibition held by Genbei Yamanaka, the 7th generation of the Seikado family

As a result of the development of unique techniques during the Heian era, Japanese metalwork has flourished as an important element in such broad fields as architecture, religion, luxury goods, and weaponry. This has, in turn, led to the development of a rich culture surrounding the craft. However, as the generations have changed, so too have our living environments, and metal handicrafts have become quite uncommon in our daily lives. As a result of this, those working in the metalworks industry have become fewer and fewer.

Even to this day, Seikado continues to create works for the imperial court and Buddhist adornings for Shinto shrines, while at the same time producing metal handicrafts that fit with modern lifestyles. In this exhibition, there are around 50 pieces including incense burners, tableware, containers for green tea, and flower vases, made from silver, tin, and bronze.

Da quando la sua tecnica originale nacque nell’epoca Heian (dall’ottavo al dodicesimo secolo), l’arte di metallo giapponese si trovava nei vari campi, per esempio nell’architettura, nella religione, nei beni voluttuari e anche nelle armi, ed aiutava a sviluppare la nostra propria cultura. Nonostante ciò, insieme al cambiamento dell’epoca, anche l’ambiente della nostra vita è notevolmente cambiata. Alla fine, i giapponesi non usano gli oggetti di metallo quotidianamente come prima. Per questo stanno diminuendo anche gli artigiani specializzati dell’arte di metallo.

Noi SEIKADO, continuiamo ancora a produrre gli oggetti religiosi dei santuari o dei templi, e le opere dedicate alla famiglia imperiale, e cerchiamo di produrre anche gli altri oggetti di metallo che sarebbero adatti per la nostra vita attuale. Questa volta esponiamo circa 50 opere fatte d’argento, di stagno e di bronzo, cominciando dai vasi da fiori, gli strumenti per la cerimonia del tè, i servizi da tavola e gli incensieri.

日本の金工は、我が国独自の技法が平安時代に確立されて以来、建築・宗教・嗜好品・武器など幅広い分野において息づき、豊かな文化を育んでおります。しかし、時代の変化に伴い生活環境も大きく様変わりし、金属工芸品は日常的に用いるものではなくなってきました。その影響もあって、金属工芸に関わる従事者が少なくなっております。
清課堂は今も尚、神社の荘厳品、各家元好み煎茶道具の制作を続けるとともに、現代の生活にあった金属工芸品を生み出しております。今回は銀、錫、青銅などを用いた、花器、茶器、飲食器、香炉などおよそ50点を展示いたします。
