Iron Kettle, Tetsubin ~Origami of Iron

Geometric Shapes Inspired by Origami

Inspired by the beauty of Origami, we have created an unprecedented Iron Kettle, Tetsubin that rises up in a geometric shape. It expresses the design thought, philosophy, and aesthetic sense that our owner, Genbei, pursues. This piece is one of the most deeply cherished products Seikado has sent out this year.

Genbei, current president of Seikado, aimed to create a product that is not only beautiful in form, but also light, strong, and easy to pour, so that it can be used daily with lasting attachment. He wants this Tetsubin to be not just for tea ceremonies, it should have a design that fits in with any place in daily life. He expressed such an ideal form of ironware.

Pursuit of Functionality for Daily, Casual Use

Tetsubin production is generally done by casting, in which iron is poured into a mold. However, this work uses a new method, in which iron plates are beaten, folded, welded, and assembled.

The rough “cast surface” of a cast Tetsubin is attractive, but it is prone to rust, so careful daily care is essential. In contrast, this piece is smooth and tough with a layer of lacquer on the surface that has been shaped to a uniform thickness. As a result, it will last for a long time with simple care. The light weight of this ironware also makes it easy to use daily. In addition, the lid body and the knob are processed separately, so the knob does not get hot over a fire.

An Intriguing Geometric Shape Expressed in the Tetsubin

The shape of the Tetsubin body is a linear, modern geometric design.

As we search for what constitutes a beautiful vessel, the more we are confronted with the beauty of the natural world as an existence with which we cannot compete. The strength of the human hand may lie in its ability to create forms that would not be possible in nature.

The geometrical forms that can be said to be the epitome of such beauty can be traced back to my own childhood passion for Origami. By repeatedly folding simple geometric shapes such as triangles and rectangles, I create three-dimensional forms by hand. This is a new and nostalgic Tetsubin that reminds us of Origami, a traditional Japanese formative culture, and a part of the memories of the Japanese people.

This Tetsubin looks impressive from all directions and is sure to be the star of any occasion where you invite guests. Tetsubin’s clean and uncluttered form also fits in nicely with casual scenes such as boiling water in the kitchen.

We hope you will use it as a tool for daily life.
